2023 Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy Bombing

On the morning of 24 July 2023 (with some accounts citing the attack date as 23 July 2023), a suicide bomber struck the Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy in Mogadishu, Somalia. The attacker, reportedly dressed in a military uniform, detonated an explosive suicide vest while targeting soldiers who had lined up after breakfast. It remains unclear how the bomber gained access to the tightly secured base.
The soldiers targeted were primarily members of the 14th October Brigade (Guutada 14 Oktoober) of the Somali Armed Forces. This unit was named in honor of the victims of a 2017 terrorist attack at Mogadishu's Zobe junction, which killed more than 600 people.
According to two Somali military officers who spoke to VOA without being identified, at least 25 soldiers were killed and more than 70 were injured in the bombing, with 24 of the injured reported to be in serious condition. Al-Shabaab, the jihadist militant group that claimed responsibility for the attack, posted a different casualty count on Telegram, stating that 73 soldiers were killed and 124 injured.
The attack occurred against the backdrop of an ongoing insurgency by al-Shabaab, which began in 2006 in an effort to overthrow the internationally backed Somali government. The group has controlled parts of rural south and central Somalia and has frequently targeted military, political, and civilian sites in Mogadishu, including hotels and restaurants. Since August 2022, the Somali Armed Forces, in coordination with local fighters known as Macawiisley, had been conducting a federal government offensive aimed at reclaiming territory held by al-Shabaab and halting the group's collection of illegal taxes. Al-Shabaab's attacks, including this bombing, have been characterized as responses to these government offensives.
The bombing took place as Somalia's army was preparing to assume greater responsibility for the country's security amid the gradual withdrawal of African Union forces. Countries including the United States, the European Union, and Turkey have been assisting in training Somali soldiers as part of broader international support for Somalia's security sector.
No named individuals have been publicly charged or convicted in connection with this attack according to available reporting.
