On 17 May 2024, a group of foreign tourists visiting a public market in Bamyan Province, Afghanistan, was attacked by gunmen during daylight hours. The attack caused panic among both local residents and visiting tourists in the market area.
According to Abdul Matin Qani, a spokesman for the Taliban-led Interior Ministry, the attack killed six people: three Spanish nationals and three Afghans, one of whom was identified as a member of the Taliban. Eight other people were injured in the shooting, including one Lithuanian, one Norwegian, one Australian, and one Spaniard.
Two days after the attack, the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (IS-KP) claimed responsibility for the shooting. The incident drew renewed attention to security conditions in Afghanistan under Taliban governance and underscored the continuing threat posed by militant groups operating in the region.
