2024 Shangla Bombing

On 26 March 2024, a suicide bomber attacked a bus transporting five Chinese engineers and their Pakistani driver as they traveled on the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad toward Kohistan, where the group was headed to work on the Dasu Dam project. The attack occurred in Bisham Tehsil, in Shangla District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The bomber drove an explosive-filled car into the bus, and all six people aboard — five Chinese nationals and one Pakistani national — were killed.
No group claimed responsibility for the bombing. The Taliban-led government of Afghanistan denied any Afghan involvement in the attack. The bombing occurred during a week in which Chinese interests in Pakistan were targeted multiple times; a Pakistani naval base and a port used by China were also attacked by Baloch separatists during the same week. Following the attacks, the Chinese Embassy in Pakistan issued a warning urging Chinese nationals in the country to remain alert.
In the aftermath, Chinese investigators traveled to Pakistan on 29 March 2024 to join the investigation into the bombing. Pakistani police announced on 1 April 2024 that they had arrested 12 people in connection with the attack. On 23 May 2024, Pakistan's Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet decided to pay approximately US$2.58 million in compensation to the families of the Chinese workers who died in the attack.
No individual has been publicly named as charged or convicted in connection with the bombing, and the perpetrator's identity and organizational affiliation remain unconfirmed.
