Between 2002 and 2004, Ariel Castro separately abducted three young women — Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus — from the streets of Cleveland, Ohio, offering each a ride before taking them to his home at 2207 Seymour Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood. There, he confined them in locked rooms, restrained them, and subjected them to prolonged sexual and physical abuse over nearly eleven years. Knight disappeared in August 2002 at age 21; Berry disappeared in April 2003, the day before her 17th birthday; and DeJesus, a friend of Castro's daughter, disappeared in April 2004 at age 14. Investigative resources devoted to Knight's case were limited in part because she was an adult believed to have run away, and her listing in the National Crime Information Center database was removed after fifteen months.
While in captivity, Berry gave birth to a daughter fathered by Castro, delivered with Knight's assistance in an inflatable pool on Christmas Day 2006. Prosecutors later described diaries kept by the victims documenting forced sexual conduct, confinement, threats, and abuse. Knight told police Castro had impregnated her multiple times and caused miscarriages through beatings. Police visited Castro's home only once during the captivity period, in connection with an unrelated matter, and found no evidence of the women.
On May 6, 2013, Berry made contact with neighbors after Castro left the house without securing an interior door. With help from neighbor Charles Ramsey, she broke through the exterior storm door and escaped with her six-year-old daughter, then called police. Officers subsequently entered the home and found Knight and DeJesus, who were also rescued. Castro was arrested later that day in a McDonald's parking lot. Two of his brothers were briefly detained but released without charges after police found no evidence of their involvement.
Castro was initially charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. Grand jury indictments in June and July 2013 expanded the charges to 977 counts, including kidnapping, rape, gross sexual imposition, felonious assault, child endangerment, aggravated murder (related to termination of pregnancies through beatings), and possession of criminal tools. On July 26, 2013, Castro pleaded guilty to 937 counts as part of a plea bargain, avoiding the death penalty in exchange for consecutive sentences of life imprisonment plus 1,000 years without parole, forfeiture of his assets including the Seymour Avenue house, and waiver of his right to appeal. At sentencing on August 1, 2013, Castro addressed the court, denying that he tortured the women and claiming much of the sexual contact was consensual. Knight delivered a victim impact statement condemning his actions.
The house was demolished on August 7, 2013, as required by the plea agreement. One month into his sentence, on September 3, 2013, Castro was found hanging in his prison cell at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. He was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after. The Franklin County coroner ruled the death a suicide by hanging; a subsequent consultant's report and a state highway patrol review both concurred with that finding, despite a preliminary internal report suggesting the possibility of accidental death.
