Assassination of Efraim Elrom

Background
The early 1970s were a period of significant political turmoil in Turkey. Prior to the imposition of martial law in Istanbul and Ankara on April 26, 1971, left-wing militant groups had carried out two kidnappings of American servicemen, two abductions of wealthy Turkish citizens, several bank robberies, and bombings of businesses and schools. The abduction of Efraim Elrom marked the end of a relatively quiet period for leftist militant activity in the country.
Victim
Efraim Elrom, born Hofstaedter in Poland in 1911, served as Israel's consul-general in Istanbul at the time of his death. He had joined the Israeli foreign service in 1969, at which point he adopted a Hebrew name as required. Prior to his diplomatic posting, he served as assistant commander of a special interrogation unit established shortly after the 1960 capture of Adolf Eichmann by Israeli agents in Argentina, and retired from the police force after 27 years of service. He was survived by his widow, Elsa Elrom; the couple had no children.
Abduction and Death
On Monday, May 17, 1971, Elrom was abducted by militants of the People's Liberation Party-Front of Turkey, a Marxist–Leninist group, as he returned to his apartment for lunch. He was struck by the abductors after resisting, then carried wrapped in a sheet to a waiting car. His captors demanded the release of imprisoned revolutionary militants in exchange for Elrom's life. The Turkish government refused this demand and instead launched a mass arrest of prominent leftists. A subsequent curfew and house-to-house search of Istanbul are believed to have hastened his killing. Elrom's body was discovered in an apartment in the Nişantaşı quarter of Istanbul at 04:15 on Sunday, May 23, 1971, five days after his abduction, with three bullet wounds to the head.
Perpetrators
Mahir Çayan, Ulaş Bardakçı, and Hüseyin Cevahir were identified as the individuals who carried out the abduction. The People's Liberation Party-Front of Turkey, a group linked to the Marxist Palestinian guerrilla organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, claimed responsibility. The group had first drawn attention on March 4, 1971, when it kidnapped four American servicemen in Ankara. Palestinian guerrilla propaganda materials were frequently confiscated from Turkish leftist militants during this period, and a number of them are reported to have received guerrilla training in Arab countries, particularly Syria.
Aftermath
Following the killing, the Turkish government and military intensified their crackdown on the radical left, resulting in mass arrests across the country. Relations between Israel and Turkey became strained, as Israeli authorities expressed the view that the Turkish government had not done everything possible to secure Elrom's rescue.
