Illustrative

On December 4, 1997, in the small town of Santa Claus, Georgia, four members of the Daniels family were shot to death in their home. The victims were 47-year-old Danny Daniels, his 33-year-old wife Kim Daniels, their 8-year-old son Bryant Daniels, and their 16-year-old daughter Jessica Daniels. The perpetrator, 20-year-old Jerry Scott Heidler, broke into the home through a bathroom window, retrieved a shotgun from the family's gun cabinet, and shot Danny and Kim as they slept before killing Bryant and Jessica. After the killings, Heidler kidnapped three of the family's young daughters, sexually assaulting one of them, an eight-year-old, before abandoning the three girls on a rural road in Bacon County, where they were later found by a farmer and returned to authorities.

The Daniels family had a history of fostering children, including Heidler's sister, Joanne Heidler, which is how Jerry Heidler became acquainted with the family. In the months before the murders, Heidler had begun a relationship with 16-year-old Jessica Daniels, which ended after her father Danny confronted Heidler and asked him to stop visiting. Heidler's girlfriend, separately, gave birth to his stillborn son shortly before the murders, and Heidler attended the funeral the day before the killings.

Heidler was arrested approximately seven hours after the murders in Alma, Georgia, and was charged with four counts of malice murder and three counts of kidnapping. A grand jury in Toombs County indicted him on additional charges, including child molestation, in March 1998, and prosecutors sought the death penalty. Due to pre-trial publicity, the trial venue was moved to Walton County. While awaiting trial, Heidler escaped from the Toombs County Jail in July 1999 by sawing through his cell bars, but was recaptured roughly 12 hours later in nearby Vidalia.

At trial, the defense argued Heidler suffered from severe borderline personality disorder linked to a traumatic childhood involving abuse, neglect, and psychiatric institutionalization, seeking a "guilty but mentally ill" verdict. Prosecutors, led by District Attorney Richard Malone, argued the murders were premeditated and methodical. On September 2, 1999, a Walton County jury found Heidler guilty on all 11 counts, rejecting the mental illness defense. On September 4, 1999, the jury unanimously sentenced Heidler to death for each of the four murders, along with additional life and term sentences for the kidnapping, sodomy, and other charges.

Heidler has pursued multiple appeals in the years since his conviction. The Georgia Supreme Court dismissed his direct appeal in October 2000. Subsequent federal appeals were rejected in 2014, 2019, and by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2023. The U.S. Supreme Court denied his final appeal on May 20, 2024, making him eligible for an execution date to be set. As of 2025, Heidler remains on death row at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison. The case has been the subject of a 2009 book and a 2019 true-crime documentary series.
