Disappearance of Kirsa Jensen

Kirsa Jensen was a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Napier, on New Zealand's Hawke's Bay coast, who disappeared on the afternoon of 1 September 1983. That Thursday after school she rode her horse, Commodore, along the foreshore at Awatoto, a stretch of coast south of the city. She never came home, and more than four decades later her fate remains unknown and her body has never been found.
The last confirmed sighting placed Kirsa near an old World War II gun emplacement at the mouth of the Tutaekuri River. Passers-by who stopped noticed that her face was bloodied; she told one of them she had fallen from her horse, and that someone had gone to fetch her parents. Another witness described seeing a girl matching her description being held by an adult man near the emplacement, and a light-coloured utility vehicle parked nearby. When Kirsa had not returned by early evening, her mother contacted police. Commodore was later found tethered to the emplacement, but searches of the river, beach, and surrounding waterways turned up no trace of her.
Police treated the case as a probable abduction and moved quickly, mounting extensive searches and appealing publicly for information; a local newspaper offered a reward within days. Over the following years the investigation pursued numerous leads. A man who came to police attention gave a confession in 1985 and then withdrew it; no charges were ever laid against him, and investigators later expressed doubt about his involvement. He died in 1992. A separate confession made overseas in 1999 was investigated and found to be baseless, and human remains discovered near the area in 2012 were determined to be far too old to be Kirsa's.
The case has endured as one of New Zealand's most closely followed unsolved disappearances. Forensic re-examination has continued as techniques improved: in 2023, testing confirmed that a blood sample recovered decades earlier from the site where Kirsa was last seen was hers, supporting the long-standing account of what happened there without identifying who was responsible. Police continue to hold the file open and say they still receive information from the public each year.
Kirsa's family and community have kept her memory present. A memorial tree and plaque were placed at the site, a chapel was dedicated to her at the Napier church where her father served, and a university award was established in her name in the field of veterinary science, which she had hoped to study. No one has been charged in connection with her disappearance, and the investigation remains active.
