Disappearance of Madeleine McCann
Documents crimes against children · ongoing investigation — written to inform, not to shock.

Madeleine Beth McCann, born 12 May 2003, disappeared from apartment 5A in the Ocean Club resort, Praia da Luz, Portugal, on the evening of 3 May 2007, during a family holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, her two-year-old twin siblings, and family friends. The children had been left asleep at around 19:00–20:30 while the adults dined at a nearby tapas restaurant, with parents checking on the children periodically. Kate McCann discovered Madeleine missing at approximately 22:00.
Portuguese police (Polícia Judiciária) led the initial investigation. Early inquiries focused on witness reports of men seen near the apartment in the days before and on the night of the disappearance, including a sighting by Jane Tanner of a man carrying a child, and a separate sighting by Martin and Mary Smith of a man carrying a child later that evening. Robert Murat, a British-Portuguese man living near the apartment, became the first formal suspect (arguido) twelve days after the disappearance; no evidence was found linking him to the case, his arguido status was lifted in July 2008, and he later received substantial libel settlements from UK newspapers.
British forensic dogs trained to detect blood and cadaver scent gave alerts in the apartment and in a car the McCanns had hired weeks after the disappearance. Subsequent low copy number DNA testing by the UK's Forensic Science Service produced results described by the testing scientist as "too complex for meaningful interpretation." On this basis, Portuguese police formed a theory that Madeleine had died accidentally in the apartment and that her parents had concealed the body. Kate and Gerry McCann were made arguidos in September 2007; this status was lifted when Portugal's attorney general archived the case in July 2008 citing lack of evidence.
The McCanns continued to fund private investigations, and in 2011 the UK's Metropolitan Police opened Operation Grange, treating the case as a likely abduction or burglary gone wrong by a stranger. In 2013 the Metropolitan Police released e-fit images of men sought in connection with the case, including one linked to a sighting of a man carrying a child toward the beach; Portuguese police reopened their inquiry shortly afterward. Operation Grange was scaled back in 2015 but continued limited inquiries.
The case drew sustained international media coverage, and the McCann family and their travelling companions faced intense scrutiny, including unfounded tabloid allegations. In 2008, Express Newspapers paid damages and issued apologies to the McCanns and their friends over false claims regarding Madeleine's disappearance. The McCanns testified before the UK's Leveson Inquiry into press conduct in 2011.
In 2020, German prosecutors named Christian Brückner as their prime suspect in the presumed abduction and killing of Madeleine McCann, stating they believe she is dead; as of the source material, no charges in relation to Madeleine's disappearance had been formalised against him. Madeleine McCann's whereabouts remain unknown.
