Familicide in the Federal District in 2023

Between late December 2022 and mid-January 2023, ten members of an extended family were killed in a series of connected abductions and homicides in Brazil's Federal District, in a case that Brazilian press described as the largest massacre in the region's history. The victims included Marcos Antônio Lopes de Oliveira, his wife Renata Juliene Belchior, their daughter Gabriela Belchior, Marcos' ex-wife Cláudia Regina Marques de Oliveira, their daughter Ana Beatriz Marques de Oliveira, Marcos' son Thiago Gabriel Belchior, Thiago's wife Elizamar Silva, and the couple's three children, Gabriel, Rafael, and Rafaela da Silva.
Investigators said the killings were planned months in advance and were motivated by a desire to take possession of a farm in the Itapoã condominium, valued at about 2 million reais, where Marcos and his immediate family lived alongside two of the men later arrested, as well as to obtain money Cláudia had received from a house sale. Marcos reportedly did not have legal title to the farm, as a repossession case was pending in court.
The reported sequence began on 28 December 2022, when Marcos, Renata, and Gabriela were seized at the farm in a staged robbery; Marcos was shot and the three were taken into captivity in Planaltina, where Marcos was later dismembered and buried. On 4 January 2023, Cláudia and Ana Beatriz were lured to a fake moving job and taken captive using Marcos' phone. On 12 January, Thiago was lured to the farm and taken captive, while his wife and three children were driven to Cristalina, Goiás, killed, and their vehicle burned. On 14 January, Renata and Gabriela were taken to Unaí, Minas Gerais, killed, and their car burned. On 15 January, Thiago, Cláudia, and Ana Beatriz were killed and buried in a rural cistern near Planaltina.
Investigations began on 12 January 2023 after Elizamar's two eldest children reported her missing. Police subsequently located burned vehicles containing bodies in Cristalina and near Unaí, and later recovered Marcos' dismembered remains and the buried bodies of Thiago, Cláudia, and Ana Beatriz. Investigators said captive victims were forced to hand over personal and banking information, including credit cards and passwords.
Five men — Gideon Batista de Menezes, Horácio Carlos Ferreira Barbosa, Fabrício Silva Canhedo, Carlomam dos Santos Nogueira, and Carlos Henrique de Oliveira ("Galego") — were arrested in connection with the case, and a 17-year-old was also under investigation. The five men were indicted on charges including robbery followed by death, corruption of minors, extortion through qualified kidnapping resulting in death, qualified homicide, and concealment of a corpse, with potential combined sentences exceeding 300 years. On 16 February 2023, the DF Chamber of Deputies honored the civil police officers who worked on the investigation.
