Murder of Mark Niederbrock, Debra Kelley, Emma Niederbrock, and Melanie Wells (Farmville murders)

In September 2009, four people were killed in Farmville, Virginia, in what became known as the Farmville murders. The victims were Rev. Mark Alan Niederbrock, a Presbyterian pastor; Dr. Debra Sue Kelley, an associate professor of sociology and criminal justice studies at Longwood University; their 16-year-old daughter Emma Kelley Niederbrock; and Emma's 18-year-old friend Melanie Grace Wells. The bodies were discovered just after 3:00 p.m. on September 18, 2009, at Debra Kelley's home, where Kelley and Emma lived. Three bodies were found in a downstairs bedroom and one upstairs. All four had been bludgeoned to death with a ball-peen hammer and a splitting maul.
According to Prince Edward County Commonwealth's Attorney James Ennis, the killings stemmed from the anger of Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III, a 20-year-old aspiring horrorcore rapper from Castro Valley, California, over his failing online relationship with Emma Niederbrock. Emma, McCroskey, Emma's parents, and Wells had traveled together to a horrorcore music festival in Southgate, Michigan, days before the killings. After the group returned to Virginia, McCroskey became increasingly distraught about the relationship. Early on the morning of the murders, around 3 a.m., he attacked and killed Wells, Kelley, and Emma in turn as they slept, none of whom had defensive wounds. When Mark Niederbrock arrived at the home about three days later, McCroskey killed him as well, then moved bodies and attempted to clean the scene.
The murders came to light after Melanie Wells' mother, unable to reach her daughter, repeatedly contacted police. On one visit, McCroskey answered the door and gave officers a false story about Wells' whereabouts; police returned after further calls from Wells' mother and discovered the bodies. McCroskey fled in a stolen car belonging to Mark Niederbrock, was briefly stopped and cited for driving without a license without arousing suspicion, and was ultimately apprehended asleep in the baggage claim area of Richmond International Airport on September 19, 2009, preparing to fly back to California.
McCroskey, who had no prior criminal record, was initially charged with first-degree murder, robbery, and grand larceny, and later charged with six counts of capital murder under Virginia law. Facing a possible death sentence, he pleaded guilty on September 20, 2010, to two counts of capital murder and two counts of first-degree murder. He received four sentences of life imprisonment. Ennis said the victims' families supported the plea agreement rather than pursuing a trial and the death penalty. As of 2026, McCroskey is reported to be serving his sentence at Keen Mountain Correctional Center in Oakwood, Virginia.
