Illustrative

On 29 September 2023, an explosion occurred inside a mosque during Friday prayers in Doaba, Hangu, in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The blast killed five people and injured six others. The attack took place hours after a separate bombing targeting a religious procession in Mastung District, Balochistan Province, which killed at least 50 people.

According to reporting, a vehicle filled with explosives was stopped at the entrance of the mosque, which is located within a police facility. One of the attackers was stopped at the gate and was unable to carry out the original plan. Police said two men on motorbikes began shooting at police personnel outside the mosque before one of them detonated an explosive device close to the mosque's entrance, while the other detonated explosives on himself inside the building. At the time of the blast, the mosque was crowded with an estimated 30 to 40 worshippers.

The explosion caused the mosque's roof to collapse, trapping several people inside. Most worshippers managed to escape after hearing the first explosion. The District Police Officer of Hangu confirmed the blast occurred within the jurisdiction of the Doaba police station. A rapid rescue operation was launched immediately following the incident, with critically injured victims transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

As of the source reporting, no specific group had claimed responsibility for the attack, and officials were continuing to investigate. Amir Rana, director of the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies, stated that the Mastung and Hangu mosque bombings appeared to be the work of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). The Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan denied involvement in the Hangu blast. Raja Pervez Ashraf, speaker of Pakistan's National Assembly, condemned the attack.
