On December 12, 1997, Brian Theodore Deneke, a 19-year-old punk musician and skateboarder in Amarillo, Texas, was killed when Dustin Camp, a 17-year-old Tascosa High School student and football player, deliberately drove his car into him outside an IHOP restaurant near the Western Plaza Shopping Center. The killing followed a week of rising tension between local "punks" and "jocks," including an earlier confrontation on December 6, 1997, at the same location involving Camp and a member of the punk community, John King.
According to witness accounts, on the night of the killing Camp and his companions returned to the shopping center after drinking, expecting a fight with members of the punk community. A physical altercation broke out outside the IHOP. Camp initially drove away in his car but then turned back and struck Deneke. A passenger eyewitness later testified at trial that Camp said "I'm a Ninja in my Caddy!" as he targeted Deneke, and "I bet he liked that one!" afterward.
Camp was charged with murder. His defense, led by attorney Warren L. Clark, argued he had acted to defend a friend and characterized Deneke and the punk community as violent, while portraying Camp as a clean-cut, Christian, football-playing "good kid." Prosecution witnesses, including punks who were present, testified that Deneke was the victim and disputed the defense-of-a-third-person claim. In 1999, a jury convicted Camp of voluntary manslaughter rather than murder, and he was sentenced to ten years' probation and a $10,000 fine — a sentence that both his own attorney and the district attorney described as unusually lenient. An alternate juror later said he was surprised by the manslaughter verdict, stating he believed Deneke had been trying to get away and that Camp had a chance to stop his car.
Camp went on to violate his probation terms. In June 2001 he was arrested for underage possession of alcohol; his father, Michael Camp, was separately charged with making false statements to police in connection with covering for his son and received deferred adjudication and a fine. In September 2001, Dustin Camp was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for the probation violations. He was paroled under supervision in July 2006, with his sentence expiring in 2009.
The case drew significant national attention, including coverage on NPR, Dateline NBC, 20/20, and an MTV documentary, and prompted broader public debate in Amarillo about tolerance toward subcultures. Amarillo's mayor at the time, Kel Seliger, publicly distanced the city from the jury's verdict while calling for greater tolerance. The case has since been the subject of books, academic discussion of bias-motivated violence, tribute concerts, songs, a stage play, and the film Bomb City.
