Killing of Chad Oulson

On January 13, 2014, Chad Oulson was fatally shot inside the Grove 16 Theaters, then a Cobb Theatres location, in Wesley Chapel, Florida. Oulson, a retired Gulf War veteran, was preparing to watch the film *Lone Survivor* with his wife, Nicole Oulson, when he used his cell phone during pre-show trailers. Curtis J. Reeves Jr., a retired Special Weapons and Tactics commander seated behind the couple with his own wife, asked Oulson to turn off the phone. Reeves then left the theater to complain to staff before returning to his seat. An altercation followed in which Chad Oulson threw popcorn at Reeves. Reeves drew a .380 caliber handgun and fired, wounding Nicole Oulson in the finger and fatally injuring Chad Oulson, who died later that day.
Witness accounts included that of Alan Hamilton, an off-duty police officer present at the scene, who reported that Reeves's wife told her husband "that was no cause to shoot anyone," to which Reeves responded by telling her to be quiet. Reeves maintained that he shot Oulson because he felt physically threatened by the younger man. Several sources also indicated that Reeves had been texting during the previews, responding to a message from his son.
The case proceeded through a lengthy legal process. In 2017, a judge ruled that Reeves could not claim protection under Florida's Stand Your Ground law; this ruling was later overturned on appeal, which left the question of self-defense to be decided by a jury at trial. Tampa defense attorney Richard Escobar described the case as "the largest self-defense case ever in Florida."
Nearly eight years after the shooting, in February 2022, a jury acquitted Reeves of both second-degree murder and aggravated battery. During the trial, Reeves testified that the confrontation had frightened him more than any other experience in his life, including his time in SWAT operations and his broader law enforcement career; prosecutors challenged this characterization. Officers who were present at the scene of the shooting described Reeves's demeanor at the time as extremely calm.
Following the trial's conclusion, the Oulson Family Foundation was established in 2022. The foundation provides funding for children affected by gun violence, covering costs such as counseling, medical attention, and college tuition.
