Murder of April Jones

April Sue-Lyn Jones was a five-year-old girl from Machynlleth, a market town in Powys, mid-Wales. Born on 4 April 2007, she had cerebral palsy. On the evening of 1 October 2012, she had been playing with friends near her home when she was last seen at around 7 p.m. getting into a vehicle after speaking with its driver. Her family reported her missing shortly afterwards, and a major search operation began that night.
The investigation, led by Dyfed-Powys Police and codenamed Operation Tempest, grew into what was described as the largest missing-person search in British policing history. Over nearly eight months it involved multiple police teams, specialist search units and hundreds of local volunteers who searched the countryside around Machynlleth.
Mark Bridger, a local man then aged 46, was arrested on 2 October 2012, less than a day after April disappeared. He had been identified after matching descriptions of the driver and of a left-hand-drive Land Rover Discovery that a young witness had seen April enter. On 5 October the case was formally declared a murder inquiry, and on 6 October Bridger was charged with abduction, murder, and perverting the course of justice.
Bridger's trial opened at Mold Crown Court on 29 April 2013. He denied murder, claiming that he had accidentally struck April with his car and could not recall what he had done with her body. Evidence presented at trial included traces of April's blood found inside his rented cottage and bone fragments recovered from the fireplace that were consistent with those of a child. April's body was never found.
On 30 May 2013, after several hours of deliberation, the jury found Bridger guilty of all three charges. He was sentenced the same day to life imprisonment with a whole life order, meaning he would not be eligible for release. In passing sentence, the judge rejected Bridger's account of events and found that the offence was sexually motivated.
April's funeral was held at St Peter's Church in Machynlleth on 26 September 2013 and was attended by hundreds of mourners. Her disappearance and death prompted a lasting response in her community, and campaigning by her family contributed to changes by major search engines to block access to child sexual abuse imagery. Bridger later began an appeal against his whole-life tariff but withdrew it before it was heard. The case remains one of the most prominent child-abduction cases in recent Welsh and British history, both for the scale of the search and for the community response that followed.
