Murder of Sophie Hook

Illustrative

Sophie Louise Hook (27 May 1988 – 30 July 1995) was a seven-year-old from Great Budworth, near Northwich, Cheshire, who was staying with her grandparents in Llandudno, North Wales, when she was murdered. On 29 July 1995 she had been playing with cousins in the garden. Several witnesses saw Howard Hughes cycling in the area that day, and he was believed to have attempted to approach another young child shortly before the murder.

Sophie and three other children slept outdoors in a tent that night. Her cousin confirmed she was still in the tent at 2:30 am, but by 7:15 am she was missing. She was reported missing to police at 8:20 am, and her body was found on a beach half a mile away that same morning by a man walking his dog. A post-mortem found she had been assaulted and had died of manual strangulation; her body had then been placed in the sea, which investigators believed was an attempt to destroy forensic evidence.

Hughes was arrested on the day the body was found but initially released, then re-arrested and charged with Sophie's murder. His trial began at Chester Crown Court on 24 June 1996 on charges of abduction, rape and murder. Although no forensic evidence linked him directly to the killing, the jury heard testimony including from his father, who said Hughes had admitted the murder to him (a claim Hughes has always denied). On 18 July 1996, Hughes was found guilty on all three counts and given three life sentences, with the trial judge recommending he never be released. In November 2002, the Home Secretary set a minimum term of 50 years. Hughes has pursued unsuccessful appeals against his conviction.
