Murder of Aya Hachem

Aya Hachem was a University of Salford law student originally from Lebanon, who had moved to the United Kingdom in 2011. On 17 May 2020, at approximately 15:00 BST, she was walking on King Street in Blackburn, Lancashire, when she was struck and killed by gunfire during a drive-by shooting.
The shooting was not intended to target Hachem. It was a hit ordered by Feroz Suleman, the manager of a tyre business, against a rival businessman named Pachah Khan, who was nearby at the time. The gunman, identified as Zamir Raja, fired the shots that struck Hachem instead, killing her as what is described as an act of crossfire in a planned attack that went wrong.
The case proceeded to a 12-week trial at Preston Crown Court in 2021. On 3 August 2021, seven men were convicted of murder in connection with the planned shooting: Feroz Suleman, who was said to have ordered the hit; Zamir Raja, the shooter; and Anthony Ennis, Ayaz Hussain, Abubakr Satia, Uthman Satia, and Kashif Manzoor, who were also found to have played a part in the plot. All seven were sentenced to life imprisonment on 5 August 2021.
A further defendant, Judy Chapman, the girlfriend of co-defendant Uthman Satia, was tried alongside the others. She was cleared of murder but convicted of manslaughter. Chapman was sentenced on 1 October 2021 to 15 years' imprisonment.
The case drew significant public attention in the UK due to the circumstances of Hachem's death — an uninvolved bystander killed as a result of a targeted attack aimed at someone else entirely.
