Killing of Barbara Barnes

Background

Barbara Ann Barnes was a 13-year-old eighth-grade student at Harding Middle School in Steubenville, Ohio. She was described by those who knew her as soft-spoken and a good student. She typically walked to and from school along with many other students, given the short distance between her home and the school. Her father had been shot to death in 1989, an event that reportedly affected her personality significantly in the years that followed.

Disappearance and Murder

On December 7, 1995, a classmate reported that Barnes was walking to school in Steubenville when she was abducted. She did not return home, prompting an investigation that included statewide searches. On February 22, 1996, surveyors discovered her remains. Medical examiners determined that she had died of strangulation and had also been raped.

Investigation

Investigators pursued a number of leads over the years but never developed enough evidence to charge anyone, and no one questioned in the case was charged. Other leads included a Florida man, later convicted of abducting children, who was reportedly in the Steubenville area around the time Barnes disappeared. Some investigators favored the possibility that the person responsible was local to the area.
