Danielle Nicole van Dam was a seven-year-old girl who lived with her family in the Sabre Springs neighborhood of San Diego, California. On the night of February 1–2, 2002, she was put to bed in her family's home and was discovered missing the following morning. Her disappearance was reported to police on the morning of February 2, prompting one of the largest volunteer search efforts in the region's history.

Investigators focused on a neighbor who lived a short distance from the van Dam home, a self-employed engineer named David Alan Westerfield. Westerfield had traveled through San Diego and Imperial counties in his motor home over the weekend of the disappearance. Forensic evidence connected him to the crime: blood matching Danielle's DNA was recovered from his motor home and from a jacket he brought to a dry cleaner, and fibers consistent with materials from his home and vehicle were found on the child's body.

On February 27, 2002, volunteer searchers found Danielle's remains in a rural area off Dehesa Road, east of San Diego near El Cajon. Because of the condition of the body, the coroner was unable to determine a precise cause of death or whether she had been sexually assaulted. Westerfield had been arrested on February 22, several days before the discovery.

Westerfield's trial began in June 2002 and lasted about two months. On August 21, 2002, a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder and kidnapping, together with a special-circumstance finding that the killing occurred during a kidnapping, and of possession of child pornography. The jury recommended a sentence of death, and in January 2003 the court formally imposed the death penalty.

The case drew sustained public attention across the United States, both for the scale of the community search and for the questions the trial raised about forensic evidence and neighborhood safety. It contributed to wider public discussion of how communities respond to child abductions.

Westerfield pursued appeals over the following years. In 2019, the Supreme Court of California upheld both his conviction and his death sentence, rejecting arguments that certain evidence presented at trial had been unfairly prejudicial. He has remained in state custody, and because California suspended executions during this period, his sentence has not been carried out.

The murder of Danielle van Dam remains one of San Diego's most closely followed criminal cases. For the community that searched for her, it is remembered less for its legal milestones than for the child at its center and the family and neighbors who joined the effort to find her.
