Murder of Deveney Nel

On 7 August 2024, the body of 16-year-old Deveney Nel was found in a locked storeroom at Hoërskool Overberg in Caledon, South Africa. Nel, a grade 10 student who lived in Grabouw, had been serving on the school's first aid team at a sports meet that day. She was reported missing after failing to catch her ride home and not arriving at her Grabouw residence. Investigators believe she was fatally stabbed elsewhere — possibly a toilet on the school premises — and her body was then dragged to the storeroom where it was discovered. Reports indicate she had been stabbed seven times in the back, torso, and neck with a sharp object.

Following the discovery, police awaited autopsy and pathological test results to determine whether Nel had also been sexually assaulted. The killing was described in public discourse as "senseless" and generated significant shock and outrage in the local community. A memorial service for Nel was held on 16 August 2024 at the Caledon Mother Congregational Church.

On the evening of 16 August 2024, a 17-year-old boy — a fellow student and friend of Nel — was arrested in connection with her death. He made his first court appearance at the Caledon Magistrate's Court on 18 August 2024, where he was formally charged with murder. Because the accused was a minor, his identity was withheld from the public and he could not be named or photographed; subsequent proceedings were held behind closed doors. He was held in a place of safety and underwent a 30-day psychiatric evaluation at Valkenberg Hospital, which found him fit to stand trial.

The case was postponed multiple times for further investigation. On 24 April 2025, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) announced the case had been postponed pending a forum decision, and it was subsequently transferred from the Magistrate's Court to the Western Cape High Court, where the accused first appeared on 12 September 2025. The NPA confirmed the accused was not seeking bail and would oppose any bail application. Community members and protesters gathered outside the courthouse during appearances to demand justice for Nel.

Public discourse around the case was also shaped by revelations that the accused had a prior 2020 case involving sexual assault of an 11-year-old girl, which a Mossel Bay magistrate had struck out at the time despite warnings from a psychiatrist and clinical psychologist at Valkenberg Hospital that he was at "high risk of repeat offending [and] continued use of physical violence."

In October 2025, the accused was sentenced to 25 years in prison after confessing, as part of a plea agreement, to assaulting Nel, fatally stabbing her, and hiding her body to conceal the crime.
