Murder of Hannah Cornelius

Hannah Cornelius was a 21-year-old Stellenbosch University student who was abducted, raped, and killed by a gang of four men in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in the early hours of May 27, 2017. She had offered her friend Cheslin Marsh a ride home after a night out with friends, and while the two were parked outside his residence, four men surrounded their vehicle in an incident captured on CCTV. Marsh was forced into the trunk of the car and later beaten with bricks and left in a remote area, believed by the attackers to be dead; he survived with serious injuries. Cornelius was restrained between the front seats and driven with the group to a petrol station, where they attempted to withdraw money using Marsh's bank card.
After the withdrawal failed, the group drove to an acquaintance's residence and then to a closed paintball park, where Cornelius was raped by members of the group over several hours. Forensic evidence later presented at trial — including DNA linking the suspects to the assault and material recovered from Cornelius's fingernails matching two of the accused — tied the men to the crime. Near dawn, the group drove Cornelius to Knorhoek farm road, where she was killed. Her body was later found by two borehole pump technicians.
The group then robbed two other women in Kraaifontein and was apprehended following a police chase after being spotted driving Cornelius's car. Vernon Witbooi, Geraldo Parsons, Nashville Julius, and Eben Van Niekerk were identified as the attackers; Witbooi was captured on CCTV at two petrol stations attempting to withdraw money with stolen bank cards, and had changed his clothing between the two incidents. Forensic swabs taken from Parsons shortly after his arrest matched Cornelius's DNA, and he admitted to raping her, though he sought to place greater blame on Witbooi. Testimony from Parsons's girlfriend indicated that Van Niekerk burned blood-stained clothing and shoes shortly before he was apprehended. The four were tried and, in 2018, convicted and sentenced to a combined 358 years in prison, with three of the four receiving life sentences.
The case had lasting effects on Cornelius's family. Her mother, Anna Cornelius, died in a swimming accident about a year after her daughter's death; the death was ruled accidental, though her father, Willem Cornelius, later said Anna might not have had the strength to cope with the loss. Willem and Anna had established the Hannah Cornelius Foundation to help local children access education and escape community violence. Willem Cornelius was diagnosed with cancer several months after his daughter's death and died from the illness on December 9, 2022.
