Murder of Donna Jones

Background
Donna Ellen Jones (born December 25, 1975) was a graduate of Carleton University with a civil service job at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Friends described her as "bubbly," "outgoing," and "an absolute sunshine." She had been raised in a home where she was reportedly "belittled" by her father and taught that she ought to "honour her husband," and she was self-conscious about her weight and appearance.
Jones met Mark Peter Hutt in the summer of 2005 through a mutual friend. Over time she pulled away from friends and family, and her previously strong work performance began to decline. Friends noticed signs of domestic abuse, including bruises and overheard verbally abusive phone calls from Hutt. Before the couple's planned September 2007 wedding, friends staged an intervention urging Jones to call it off; when this failed, some withdrew from the wedding party. Over roughly two years, Jones's weight dropped from 162 pounds to 101 pounds. Hutt was financially and emotionally dependent on her, and notes found in her home reflected an alternating pattern of insult and affection. Jones, previously frugal, was preparing to file for bankruptcy after spending on items for Hutt, including a truck, ATV, snowmobile, and snowboard. Months before her death, oozing, apparently infected burns appeared on her arms, but she reportedly refused medical attention.
Death and investigation
Jones was found dead on December 6, 2009, on a makeshift mattress of couch cushions in the basement of the couple's home on Barwell Avenue in Ottawa. Hutt admitted to dousing her with boiling water but waited 11 days after she stopped breathing to call 911. Forensic evidence indicated she had died up to 12 hours before that call, despite Hutt's claim she had been alive and talking three hours earlier. Hutt initially claimed Jones had fallen into a fire pit, later changing his account to say he had accidentally scalded her with a pot of boiling water and attempted home treatment after she refused hospital care. About 40% of her body had been burned. Although Jones spoke by phone to several people afterward, including her mother, she did not disclose her injuries or call for help herself; the Crown attorney characterized this as reflecting a "trauma bond." Friends had filed a third-party complaint with police alleging abuse the day after Jones was scalded, but it went uninvestigated until after her body was found.
Trial and verdict
At autopsy, 29 air-rifle pellets were found in Jones's skin; forensic pathologist Christopher Milroy testified the gun would have needed to be fired from a few feet away, with at least two pellets fired after the scalding. She also had nine fractured ribs, a broken nose, two black eyes, and numerous cuts, bruises, and scrapes, along with older healed fractures suggesting a history of abuse. Burn expert Joel Fish testified that with proper treatment, Jones would have had a "virtually 100 per cent" chance of survival. Hutt's defence did not dispute the abuse and conceded he had tortured Jones "beyond comprehension," but argued her injuries did not cause her death; Hutt pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death, a plea the Crown rejected in favor of pursuing first-degree murder. On June 7, 2013, a jury convicted Hutt of first-degree murder, resulting in the automatic sentence of life imprisonment with no parole eligibility for 25 years.
