Murder of Jackie Vandagriff

Jackie Vandagriff (born Jaqueline Rae) was a 24-year-old nutrition student at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, who had previously attended the University of North Texas before transferring. Classmates described her as vibrant, friendly, and full of enthusiasm, and she was pursuing a career as a nutritionist at the time of her death. Charles Dean Bryant, a 30-year-old personal trainer and former fitness-center employee, had developed a troubling pattern of behavior in his relationships before meeting Vandagriff.
Vandagriff met Bryant on the evening of September 13, 2016, at a bar in Denton, Texas. Surveillance footage and witness accounts showed the two left the bar together and went to Bryant's home in Grapevine, Texas. The following day, authorities found Vandagriff's body in a park in Grapevine after firefighters responding to a small fire there discovered her remains, which had been dismembered and set on fire in an apparent attempt to conceal the crime.
Investigators linked Bryant to the killing through surveillance footage showing him with Vandagriff, along with GPS data and DNA evidence recovered from her remains, and he was arrested shortly after her body was discovered. The investigation revealed that Bryant had a history of disturbing behavior toward women: an ex-girlfriend had recently obtained a restraining order against him, accusing him of stalking and harassment, and he remained free at the time he killed Vandagriff despite that warning.
At trial, Bryant's defense argued in opening statements that he was guilty of tampering with evidence but not of murder, asserting that he panicked after Vandagriff's death and attempted to conceal her body. The defense did not dispute that Bryant was responsible for her death but contended that she had died during sex and that the killing was an impulsive act rather than a premeditated one. Prosecutors presented a different account, arguing that Bryant lured Vandagriff to his home, strangled her, then dismembered her body and attempted to burn the remains.
The jury convicted Bryant of murder. In 2018, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
