James Curran (c. 1962 – 3 April 2005) was a native of The Liberties, an inner-city area of Dublin, Ireland, that had been affected since the 1980s by drug abuse and drug dealing. Known to friends as "Jimmy," he was a fitness enthusiast who ran marathons and competed in martial arts, winning numerous awards and a world kickboxing title. He was the father of one child and one of six brothers, and he spent years mentoring and coaching young people from his neighbourhood. According to the case record, Curran had repeatedly criticised the role of former Irish republican paramilitaries in extorting protection money from drug dealers in Dublin's south inner city.
Shortly after Christmas 2004, in a Dublin pub, Curran witnessed Bernard Dempsey — described as a former local Provisional IRA commander who had become an election activist for Sinn Féin — and his associates receiving an envelope of cash from members of a heroin-dealing group. Having seen the harm heroin had caused in his community, Curran confronted Dempsey across the bar, an exchange that reportedly angered him.
On 3 April 2005, Curran was attending a karaoke evening at the Green Lizard pub, close to his family home in The Liberties. Dempsey was also present and tried to pressure Curran into leaving. When that failed, he left the pub and returned a short time later with a handgun. He approached Curran — who was seated at a table with Dempsey's sister — from behind and shot him three times in the back of the head in front of other customers before walking out.
Bernard Dempsey was arrested soon afterwards. A conviction initially appeared uncertain because several witnesses were reportedly warned that they would be killed if they testified. Two witnesses, including Dempsey's sister, nevertheless came forward and gave evidence at his trial. The jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict, and Dempsey was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
In a victim impact statement, the victim's brother told the court that the family had been "traumatised by this act of wanton destruction on a young life," and after the verdict said he was shocked but that justice had been served.
The killing has been described as a politically charged murder linked to tensions over paramilitary influence and drug-related racketeering in Dublin's inner city. Contemporaneous coverage of the case and its trial appeared in the Irish and British press.
