Murder of John Monckton
Documents violence — written to inform, not to shock.

John Victor Monckton (13 October 1955 – 29 November 2004) was a British financier who served as Managing Director of Bonds at Legal & General Group PLC, a major British insurance firm. He was educated at Downside and Lincoln College, Oxford, was a Roman Catholic, a distant cousin of Viscount Monckton of Brenchley, and had joined the Sovereign Military Order of Malta in 1977.
Monckton was killed at his home on Upper Cheyne Row in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in November 2004, an area described as nominally low-crime. During the attack, his wife, Homeyra Monckton, was severely assaulted. The couple's nine-year-old daughter called the police, but the perpetrators fled the scene before officers arrived. A suspect, Damien Hanson, was arrested the following day.
Hanson was ultimately convicted of Monckton's murder and of the attempted murder of Homeyra Monckton, receiving three life sentences. The trial judge recommended a minimum term of 36 years before Hanson could be considered for parole, described as one of the lengthiest minimum terms ever handed down in British legal history. At the time of the killing, Hanson had at least one previous conviction for attempted murder and had been released from prison only three months earlier, having served half of a 12-year sentence.
Hanson's accomplice, Elliot White, was convicted of manslaughter, wounding with intent, and robbery, and is serving an 18-year sentence. In 2006, Hanson's half-sister, Laura Campbell, was jailed for four years for providing a false alibi in connection with the crime.
The case drew scrutiny in part because of Hanson's status as a convicted violent offender who was under probation supervision at the time of the killing, having been released early from a prior attempted murder sentence.
