Killing of Kirsty Jones

Kirsty Jones was a British national who was travelling in Thailand in 2000. On 10 August of that year, she was found dead in her hotel room in Chiang Mai. According to available reporting, she had been raped and strangled. The case attracted widespread press coverage both in the United Kingdom and internationally at the time.

Despite the level of public and media attention, the case was never solved. No individual was ever identified as her killer, and no one was charged in connection with her death. The investigation remained open for two decades without a resolution.

Under Thai law, prosecutors have a twenty-year window in which to bring murder charges. Because Jones's killer was never identified within that period, the case was officially closed on the day marking the twentieth anniversary of the murder, in 2020, when the statute of limitations expired.

Kirsty Jones's case remains formally unsolved. No suspects have been publicly named or charged, and the identity of the person responsible for her death has never been established through the criminal justice process.
