Murder of Leanne Tiernan
Documents violence · sexual violence · crimes against children — written to inform, not to shock.

Leanne Tiernan (27 September 1984 – 26 November 2000) was a pupil at West Leeds High School who was last seen alive at 4:50 p.m. on 26 November 2000, after returning by bus from a shopping trip to Leeds city centre with her friend Sarah Whitehouse. The girls parted at Houghley Lane, and Tiernan was last seen heading along an unlit path through Houghley Gill, less than a mile from her home. When she failed to arrive home, her mother contacted police, and a missing person inquiry was launched at 7:00 p.m. that evening.
The resulting investigation, led by Detective Superintendent Chris Gregg, became one of the largest ever undertaken by West Yorkshire Police. It involved up to 200 officers, hundreds of volunteers, more than 1,400 house-to-house inquiries, the search of around 1,750 buildings, underwater searches of thirty-two drainage wells, the draining of a two-mile section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and a temporary halt to household waste collections so that bins could be searched. DNA samples were taken from 140 men during the initial inquiry. Despite extensive publicity, including a reward offer and a public appeal via an E-FIT image, no trace of Tiernan was found for nine months.
On 20 August 2001, her body was discovered by a member of the public walking dogs in Lindley Woods, near Otley, close to where another murder victim, Yvonne Fitt, had been found in 1992. Tiernan's body had been wrapped in plastic bin bags and a duvet cover, with cable ties used as ligatures and to bind her hands. Forensic examination suggested her body may have been kept in cold storage for a period after her death. Following identification of the body, DNA samples were taken from around 200 people, including known sex offenders in the area.
Forensic work linking a dog collar to a specific retailer, mitochondrial DNA from a hair found on a scarf around Tiernan's neck, matching twine, cable ties traceable to Royal Mail/Parcelforce supply, carpet fibres, and pollen analysis connected the crime to John Taylor, a Parcelforce delivery worker living about 1,300 yards from Tiernan's home. Taylor was arrested on 16 October 2001. He initially claimed her death was accidental. On 8 July 2002, at Leeds Crown Court, Taylor pleaded guilty to the kidnap and murder of Leanne Tiernan and received two life sentences. His minimum term for the murder was later set at 30 years by the High Court in December 2006.
Following a police review of unsolved sexual assaults, Taylor pleaded guilty on 4 February 2003 to two rapes committed in 1988 and 1989, receiving a further life sentence with early release provisions expressly disapplied. As a result of the Tiernan inquiry, West Yorkshire Police reopened at least four other cold case murder investigations, and Strathclyde Police reopened investigations into the murders of five Glasgow sex workers. In October 2018, Taylor was sentenced to a whole life order in relation to a further series of rapes and sexual assaults.
