Muhammad Naufal Zidan was a second-year student at the University of Indonesia's Faculty of Humanities, majoring in Russian literature. Born on 13 July 2004 in Lumajang, East Java, he had entered the university in 2022.

On 2 August 2023, Zidan was escorted to his lodging in Kukusan, Beji, by a senior student, Altafasalya Ardnika Basya. After they arrived, Basya attacked and fatally stabbed Zidan, then concealed the body and took Zidan's laptop, wallet, and phone before leaving.

When Zidan's family could not reach him, they asked his uncle to check on him on 4 August. The uncle had the locked room opened, found Zidan's body, and alerted police. Zidan's body was taken to the National Police Hospital in Kramat Jati for autopsy.

Police arrested Basya, a 23-year-old University of Indonesia student, within hours of the body's discovery, and recovered Zidan's stolen belongings at his residence. Investigators said Basya had been facing financial difficulties and stated he had also attempted to access Zidan's bank account. The University of Indonesia expressed condolences and turned the matter over to police.

Basya was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment; an appeal by prosecutors seeking a harsher penalty was rejected, and the life sentence was upheld.
