Murder of Odin Lloyd

Odin Leonardo John Lloyd (November 14, 1985 – June 17, 2013) was a semi-professional American football player who had been a linebacker for the Boston Bandits of the New England Football League since 2007. He was born in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, spent time in Antigua, and grew up in the Dorchester section of Boston. At the time of his death, Lloyd was dating Shaneah Jenkins, sister of the fiancée of former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.
On June 17, 2013, Lloyd was shot and killed in an industrial park about one mile from Hernandez's North Attleborough home. Surveillance footage showed Lloyd leaving his South End Boston residence early that morning and entering a car with Hernandez, Ernest Wallace, and Carlos Ortiz. Lloyd sent his sister several text messages in the minutes before his death, including "Nfl." and "just so you know." Footage showed the car driving toward a secluded gravel pit and returning a few minutes later; police say Lloyd was shot during that interval. His body was discovered later that day by a jogger.
Prosecutors said Lloyd and Hernandez had been in contact hours before the killing regarding marijuana, that keys to a car rented by Hernandez were found in Lloyd's pocket, that bubble gum purchased by Hernandez was found stuck to a shell casing at the scene with DNA matching Hernandez, and that shoe impressions at the scene matched shoes Hernandez was seen wearing on surveillance video that night. Police searched Hernandez's home on June 18, 2013, and noted that his home security system had been damaged and that he had hired house cleaners the day Lloyd's body was found.
Hernandez was arrested on June 26, 2013, and charged with first-degree murder and several firearms offenses; the Patriots released him shortly after his arrest. Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace were arrested on June 27 and 28, 2013, respectively, in connection with the case; prosecutors said both men were with Hernandez when they drove to the crime scene. Hernandez was indicted for murder on August 22, 2013, with Ortiz and Wallace indicted on first-degree murder charges in April 2014.
Hernandez's trial began January 29, 2015, in Fall River, Massachusetts, before Judge E. Susan Garsh. On April 15, 2015, he was convicted of first-degree murder and five weapons charges and sentenced to life without parole. Wallace was acquitted of murder on May 12, 2016, but convicted of accessory after the fact and sentenced to four-and-a-half to seven years in prison. Ortiz pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact on June 27, 2016, in exchange for dismissal of the murder charge, and received the same sentence.
On April 19, 2017, days after being acquitted in an unrelated double-murder case, Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell, having apparently hanged himself. His murder conviction in the Lloyd case was initially vacated under the doctrine of abatement ab initio, but the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court overturned that doctrine and reinstated the conviction in March 2019.
