Death of John O'Keefe

On January 29, 2022, at 6:03 am, John O'Keefe, a sixteen-year veteran of the Boston Police Department, was found unconscious on the front lawn of fellow officer Brian Albert's home in Canton, Massachusetts. O'Keefe's girlfriend, financial analyst Karen Read, had dropped him off at a gathering at the Albert household after midnight and returned early that morning to search for him after he failed to come home. He was declared dead at a local hospital shortly before 8:00 am. An autopsy two days later, performed by Dr. Irini Scordi-Bello, found he died of blunt force trauma to the head, though his manner of death was ruled undetermined.

O'Keefe, born in 1975 and raised in Braintree, Massachusetts, was a graduate of Northeastern University and held a master's degree in criminal justice from UMass Lowell. Following the deaths of his sister and brother-in-law, he had taken guardianship of his niece and nephew, with whom he lived in Canton. Read, born in 1980, grew up in Taunton and Blacksburg, Virginia, and worked as a financial analyst at Fidelity Investments and as an adjunct professor at Bentley University. The couple had met in 2004 and rekindled their relationship in 2020.

On the night of January 28–29, 2022, Read and O'Keefe drank at two Canton bars before joining a group, including Brian Albert and his wife Nicole, at the Albert household. Cell phone data showed O'Keefe's phone stopped moving near the house around 12:24 am and recorded no further substantial movement until after 6:00 am. Read later made a series of angry voicemails to O'Keefe after he failed to return, then searched for him with friends before finding his body near a flagpole on the Albert lawn around 6:00 am.

Read was arrested and initially charged with manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of a collision causing death; a grand jury later upgraded the charges to second-degree murder, manslaughter while under the influence, and leaving the scene of personal injury and death. Prosecutors alleged Read struck O'Keefe with her Lexus after dropping him off. Read's defense argued O'Keefe was beaten inside the Albert home and his body moved outside, alleging a law-enforcement effort to frame Read, and pointed to conduct by lead investigator Michael Proctor, who was later fired by the Massachusetts State Police for sending derogatory text messages about Read and sharing investigative details with non-law-enforcement individuals.

Read's first trial, beginning in April 2024, ended in a mistrial on July 1, 2024, after the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. A second trial began April 1, 2025; on June 18, 2025, Read was found not guilty on the three major charges but guilty of operating a vehicle under the influence, for which she received one year of probation. The case drew extensive local and national attention, including a citizen-led push for an independent audit of Canton police, protests outside the courthouse, and a separate criminal case against a local blogger who covered the story. The O'Keefe family separately filed a wrongful death civil lawsuit against Read and two bars, which was stayed pending resolution of the criminal case.
