On November 14, 1997, Reena Virk, a 14-year-old Indo-Canadian girl living in Saanich, British Columbia, was swarmed and beaten by a group of teenagers under the Craigflower Bridge. When she tried to leave the area, two of her attackers, Kelly Ellard and Warren Glowatski, assaulted her again, smashing her head against a tree and dragging her into the Gorge Waterway, where she drowned. Her body was found by police divers on November 22, 1997, in a shallow tidal pool roughly one kilometre from where she was murdered. An autopsy conducted by pathologist Laurel Gray found severe internal and external bruising, a swollen brain, a shoe imprint on her head consistent with stomping or kicking, and pebbles in her throat consistent with drowning face down in shallow water.

Virk had reportedly been bullied by peers and was described as desperate for acceptance. Her family, Jehovah's Witnesses within a predominantly Sikh South Asian community, were said to be "a minority within a minority." In 1996 she had reported her father for sexual molestation and was briefly placed into provincial care before returning home. Her case attracted substantial media attention in Canada, in part due to her prior bullying and the young age of those accused; The Globe and Mail described it at the time as being "elevated into a national tragedy."

Eight teenagers were tried and convicted in relation to her death. Six teenage girls, referred to in media coverage as the "Shoreline Six," were convicted of assault causing bodily harm for their roles in the initial beating, receiving sentences ranging from 60-day conditional sentences to one year in jail. Warren Glowatski, who was 16 at the time, was convicted of second-degree murder in June 1999 and given a life sentence, with parole eligibility after seven years; his conviction was upheld on appeal in November 2001. He was granted day parole in June 2007 and full parole in June 2010.

Kelly Ellard, who was 15 at the time of the killing, stood trial three times. She was first convicted of second-degree murder in March 2000; that conviction was overturned in February 2003 and a new trial ordered. Her second trial ended in a mistrial in July 2004 after a deadlocked jury. A third trial resulted in a second-degree murder conviction in April 2005, which was later overturned by the BC Court of Appeal. On June 12, 2009, the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the Court of Appeal in an 8–1 decision, restoring Ellard's conviction. She was granted conditional day parole in November 2017 and later changed her name to Kerry Marie Sim; her parole was extended multiple times before being cancelled in 2025 following breach findings.

Two Canadian sociologists have described the case as a watershed moment for a public "moral panic" over girl violence in Canada in the late 1990s.
