Murder of Shibli Sadiq Hridoy

Shibli Sadiq Hridoy was a 20-year-old Bengali man from a poor family; his father worked as a truck driver. To support himself while studying at Kadalpur School and College, Hridoy worked as a manager at a poultry farm in Kadalpur, in Bandarban, Bangladesh. Through this job he became friendly with several men from the Marma tribe who also worked at the farm.
On the night of 28 August 2023, Hridoy was kidnapped. Two days later, his parents were contacted by the kidnappers, who demanded a ransom of 200,000 taka. After the family paid, they were told Hridoy would be returned by morning, but he did not appear. When there was no further sign of him, his family reported the matter to police.
Bangladesh police interrogated six suspects who had been accused by Hridoy's mother, Naheed Akhtar, of involvement in the crime. Four of the six later confessed. One suspect, Umongching Marma, showed investigators the area where Hridoy had been killed. Police from the Raozan police station searched the site but recovered only skeletal remains. The named suspects — Umongching Marma, Suichingmung Marma, Angthuimung Marma, and Ukyathawai Marma — had all worked at the poultry farm alongside Hridoy.
On 10 September 2023, 46-year-old Umongching Marma was arrested as the suspected mastermind, believed to bear primary responsibility for planning and carrying out the crime. The following day, while being escorted to the crime scene, he was surrounded by an angry mob of villagers and lynched.
According to the subsequent police investigation, Umongching Marma had killed Hridoy one day after the kidnapping — before contacting the parents for ransom — and then disposed of the remains in the forest to eliminate evidence; when police searched the area, only skeletal remains were recovered. Reports that parts of the body had been eaten were denied by police at a press conference on 1 October 2023.
