Murder of Suzanne Capper
Documents violence · torture — written to inform, not to shock.

Suzanne Jane Capper, aged 16, died at Withington Hospital on 18 December 1992 from multiple organ failure caused by 80% burns. She had been deliberately set on fire on 14 December 1992 after being kidnapped and held captive for seven days at a house in Moston, Manchester, where she was beaten and tortured. She was driven from the house and forced into woodland at Werneth Low, near Romiley on the outskirts of Stockport, where petrol was poured over her and she was set alight.
Capper had been known to Jean Powell, who had babysat her since childhood, and she increasingly spent time at Powell's home at 97 Langworthy Road, Moston, where Powell dealt drugs and was involved with stolen cars. The household included Powell's ex-husband Glyn Powell, Bernadette McNeilly, McNeilly's boyfriend Anthony Michael Dudson, and regular visitors Jeffrey Leigh and Powell's brother Clifford Pook. According to Wikipedia's account of the case, reasons given at trial for the kidnapping included a claimed attempt to persuade Powell to accept payment for sex, a belief that Capper had given McNeilly and Dudson pubic lice, and a dispute over a pink duffel coat.
On 7 December 1992, Capper was lured to Powell's house, beaten, had her head and pubic hair shaved, and was locked in a cupboard. She was later moved to McNeilly's house nearby, where over several days she was tied to an upturned bed, beaten, injected with amphetamines, burned with cigarettes, and subjected to loud music while McNeilly repeated a phrase referencing the film character Chucky. She was scrubbed with disinfectant and a stiff brush, and had two teeth extracted with pliers by Pook. Others who saw her being held did not intervene.
In the early hours of 14 December 1992, fearing Capper would be reported missing, the group drove her in a stolen car around 15 miles to Werneth Low, where she was pushed down an embankment, doused in petrol, and set on fire. Believing her dead, the group returned to the house. Capper survived, climbed back up the embankment, and walked around a quarter of a mile before being found by passers-by, who summoned help. She was able to name her six attackers and give Powell's address before losing consciousness; she died four days later without regaining consciousness.
Greater Manchester Police, led by Detective Inspector Peter Wall, arrested those at the Langworthy Road address on the morning of 14 December 1992. All six were charged with kidnapping and attempted murder, and later with murder following Capper's death. The trial began on 16 November 1993 and lasted 22 days. On 17 December 1993, Jean Powell, Glyn Powell, and Bernadette McNeilly were convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment; Anthony Michael Dudson, aged 16 at the time of the murder, was also convicted of murder and ordered detained at Her Majesty's pleasure. Jeffrey Leigh was acquitted of murder and jailed for false imprisonment, and Clifford Pook was cleared of murder on the judge's direction but convicted of conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm and false imprisonment.
The case attracted press commentary on social deprivation in Moston, on "girl gang" violence following the convictions of Powell and McNeilly, and on an unsubstantiated claimed link to the film Child's Play 3, which police and the British Board of Film Classification stated played no role in the murder.
