On October 15, 2008, U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Jan Paweł Pietrzak and his wife, Quiana Jenkins-Pietrzak, were killed in their home in Winchester, an unincorporated area of Riverside County, California, near Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Pietrzak, a Polish American who had emigrated to Brooklyn, New York, as a child, joined the Marines in 2003 and served as a helicopter mechanic in Iraq before marrying Jenkins in August 2008. The couple had purchased their home only months before the killings.

Four Marines entered the home; one, Tyrone Miller, allegedly forced entry by pointing a shotgun at Pietrzak. The couple were bound with duct tape and gagged. Jenkins-Pietrzak was sexually assaulted while her husband was forced to watch, and both were then shot in the head. Fires were set inside the home in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.

Lance Cpl. Emrys John, Lance Cpl. Kesaun Sykes, Pvt. Kevin Darnell Cox, and Lance Cpl. Tyrone Miller were charged with the murders; two of them had worked under Pietrzak's command. Investigators recovered items belonging to the couple, including a bracelet inscribed with their names in Polish and Pietrzak's dress uniform, from Miller's residence at Camp Pendleton, along with footprint evidence tying the suspects to the scene. Racial epithets were found spray-painted in the home, and this fueled public speculation — including from the victims' families — that the killings were racially motivated, given that Jenkins-Pietrzak was Black and Pietrzak was white. Riverside County authorities, including District Attorney Rod Pacheco, maintained the primary motive was robbery, noting stolen jewelry, a camera and wedding gifts recovered from the suspects' barracks; the criminal charges did not allege a racial motive. The defendants stated the epithets were intended to misdirect investigators.

Pietrzak's mother, Henryka Pietrzak-Varga, wrote to President-elect Barack Obama in November 2008 raising the possibility of a racial motive; the administration's belated, generic form-letter response drew a later apology when it became public. A subsequent request for a presidential audience, supported by Poland's Commissioner on Civil Rights, received a reply from the U.S. Ambassador to Poland that did not substantively address the racial-motive question.

All four defendants pleaded not guilty. Legal proceedings were prolonged, including a competency hearing for Sykes after a February 2011 courtroom incident. Three defendants — Cox, John, and Miller — went to trial in April 2013 with two separate juries; Sykes was tried separately. On June 5, 2013, Cox and John were convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, and Miller was convicted of those charges plus sexual penetration with a foreign object. On June 20, 2013, juries returned death verdicts against Miller and John, and a life-without-parole verdict for Cox. Sykes was sentenced to death on November 7, 2014. The presiding judge described the killings as among the most inhumane he had witnessed in 27 years on the bench.
