In March 2004, John Myles Sharpe killed his wife, New Zealand-born Anna Marie Kemp, and their 20-month-old daughter, Gracie, at the family's home in Mornington, a semi-rural suburb south of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Kemp was pregnant with the couple's second child at the time.
Sharpe killed Kemp on 23 March 2004 and their daughter several days later, then concealed and disposed of both bodies. In the weeks that followed, he told childcare staff and Kemp's family in New Zealand that his wife had left him for another man, using her phone and bank card to suggest she was still alive, sending a forged email to her family, and arranging for flowers to be delivered to his mother-in-law in Kemp's name.
Sharpe's public appeals for information about his "missing" family drew police suspicion. At the request of New Zealand Police, Victoria Police investigated the disappearances, interviewed Sharpe several times, and placed him under surveillance. He was arrested on 22 June 2004 and, after initially denying involvement, confessed to both killings. Investigators later recovered the victims' remains during an extensive search of a local landfill.
Sharpe pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Victoria and, on 5 August 2005, was sentenced to two consecutive terms of life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 33 years, making him eligible for parole in 2037. Kemp and Gracie were buried in Dunedin, New Zealand, under Kemp's maiden name, with a memorial reference to their unborn son, Francis.
