Springfield Three

On the night of June 6, 1992, Suzanne "Suzie" Streeter, 19, and Stacy McCall, 18, celebrated their graduation from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Missouri, attending several parties. Sherrill Levitt, 47, Streeter's mother, attended the graduation ceremony but did not join the girls' evening plans. After a final party was broken up by police around 1:50 a.m., Streeter and McCall returned to Levitt's home at 1717 East Delmar for the night rather than staying at a friend's crowded house. Levitt had last been heard from around 11:15 p.m. on June 6 in a phone call with a friend.
The following morning, when Streeter and McCall failed to arrive at a friend's house for a planned trip to a water park, friends went to check on them at the Delmar residence. They found the front door unlocked, the porch light's glass globe shattered (though the bulb was intact), and no sign of the three women. All personal belongings — including purses, cash, cigarettes, jewelry, keys, and vehicles — were left inside the home, along with the family dog, described as agitated. There were no other signs of a struggle. An answering machine message, described by police as possibly containing a clue, was inadvertently erased before it could be reviewed. Family members did not contact police until more than sixteen hours after the women were last seen, and the scene was subsequently visited and inadvertently disturbed by an estimated ten to twenty concerned friends and relatives before officers arrived.
Levitt and Streeter were legally declared dead in 1997, though their case files remain officially classified as missing. Investigators have pursued numerous leads over the years, including a 2007 ground-penetrating radar scan of a hospital parking garage based on a tip; Springfield police later stated the tip lacked credible evidence and that the garage's construction date made the theory implausible.
Named individuals have been discussed publicly as persons of interest, though none have been charged in connection with the disappearances. In 1997, Robert Craig Cox, then imprisoned in Texas as a convicted kidnapper and robber, told journalists he knew the women had been murdered, though his earlier alibi for the period had been corroborated by family and, initially, his girlfriend (who later said Cox asked her to lie). Authorities have stated they do not consider Cox credible. Other individuals have been named in media coverage as suspects, including a convicted rapist and murderer connected to the case through an unrelated 1985 murder conviction, but no one has been charged specifically in the Springfield Three disappearances.
The case remains unsolved as of the most recent published reporting, despite thousands of tips received by investigators. A memorial bench dedicated to the three women was placed in Springfield's Phelps Grove Park in 1997, and the case has been the subject of television coverage and a podcast.
