Sydney River McDonald's murders

Documents violence — written to inform, not to shock.

Illustrative

In the early morning hours of May 7, 1992, a McDonald's restaurant in Sydney River, Nova Scotia, was the site of a mass shooting and armed robbery that left three people dead and a fourth permanently disabled. The victims were Neil Burroughs Jr., 29, a maintenance worker from Glace Bay; James "Jimmy" Fagan, 27, a janitor from Sydney who was arriving for his 1:00 a.m. shift; and Donna Warren, 22, from North Sydney, a law student who was the swing manager on duty that night and the only staff member present who knew the combination to the restaurant's safe. Arlene MacNeil, a fourth employee, survived being shot in the face but was left with permanent physical and intellectual disabilities. She died in 2018.

The crime was carried out by Derek Wood, 18, an employee of the restaurant, along with two friends, Freeman Daniel MacNeil, 23, and Darren Muise, 18. The three broke into the restaurant after closing with the intention of robbing it. They killed their victims using a .22 calibre pistol, several knives, and a shovel. After forcing an employee to open the safe, they took $2,017 before fleeing. The three men were arrested about a week after the killings.

The murders drew national media attention to Sydney, Nova Scotia. The restaurant, located in the Sydney River shopping district on Kings Road, reopened on May 14, 1992, after RCMP officers and psychologists accompanied staff through the premises. The original building was demolished in 2000 and a replacement was built at a more accessible location nearby.

All three men were convicted by the end of 1993 in separate trials. MacNeil and Wood were sentenced to life imprisonment with parole eligibility after 25 years, while Muise received a sentence of 20 years before parole eligibility.

In the years since, parole outcomes have varied. Muise was granted day parole on March 29, 2011, with a National Parole Board member citing the "significant and real progress" he had made and assessing a low probability of reoffending; he received full parole on November 22, 2012. MacNeil was granted day parole on December 29, 2022. Wood's parole application was rejected that same year on the grounds that he was assessed as "too high a risk to reoffend." On March 28, 2024, MacNeil was granted full parole based on an assessed "low to moderate" risk of reoffending, on condition that he not re-enter Nova Scotia without permission. As of the available reporting, Wood remains incarcerated.
