    John Brian Altinger, a 38-year-old Edmonton resident, was lured through a fake dating profile and killed by filmmaker Mark Twitchell in October 2008. Twitchell was convicted of first-degree murder in April 2011.

    On June 15, 2012, security guard Travis Baumgartner shot four coworkers, killing three, at HUB Mall on the University of Alberta campus in Edmonton, then fled with the stolen armored truck and cash before being arrested at the U.S. border the next day.

    On September 30, 2017, Abdulahi Sharif rammed and stabbed an Edmonton police officer, then fled and struck four pedestrians with a rental truck during a police chase; all five victims survived, and Sharif was later convicted of eleven criminal offences but not charged with terrorism.
