    Murder of Poon Hiu-wing

    Amber Poon Hiu-wing, a pregnant 20-year-old from Hong Kong, was killed by her boyfriend Chan Tong-kai in a Taipei hotel room in February 2018. Jurisdictional gaps meant Chan could only be prosecuted in Hong Kong for money laundering, and the case became the stated rationale for a 2019 extradition bill that triggered months of mass protests in Hong Kong.

    Taipei Metro, between Longshan Temple Station and Jiangzicui Station · 2014

    2014 Taipei Metro attack

    On 21 May 2014, Cheng Chieh, a 21-year-old university student, stabbed random passengers on a Taipei Metro train between Longshan Temple and Jiangzicui stations, killing four people and injuring 24. He was convicted of murder and attempted murder and executed on 10 May 2016.

    2023 Taichung inheritance case

    An 18-year-old Taiwanese high school student, surnamed Lai, died in a fall in Beitun District, Taichung, two hours after registering a same-sex marriage with 26-year-old Hsia Chao-yuan on 4 May 2023, shortly after inheriting real estate reportedly worth roughly NT$500 million to over NT$1.2 billion; prosecutors ultimately declined to prosecute for murder, but Hsia was convicted of causing a public official to make false entries in official documents.

    March 19 shooting incident

    On 19 March 2004, President Chen Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu were shot and wounded while campaigning in an open-top vehicle in Tainan, Taiwan, one day before the presidential election. Both survived with non-life-threatening injuries, and the case was officially closed in August 2005 with investigators concluding a single deceased suspect, Chen Yi-hsiung, acted alone.

    Murder of Weng Chi-nan

    Weng Chi-nan, a Taichung gangster, was shot dead in his office on 28 May 2010 by a hired gunman while four police officers present took no action, later fueling suspicions of police corruption.

    Jacques Picoux, a French-born lecturer and LGBT community member in Taiwan, died by suicide in October 2016 after describing that he had no legal rights over his terminally ill partner's care or their shared home, galvanizing public support for same-sex marriage legislation in Taiwan.

    Alexander family hostage crisis

    On 18 November 1997, fugitive Chen Chin-hsing took the family of South African military attaché McGill Alexander hostage in their Taipei home for roughly 21 hours, shooting two family members before all hostages were released and Chen was captured.
