1983 Malibu Grand Prix murders

On the night of June 30 into July 1, 1983, a robbery at the Malibu Grand Prix amusement center in southwest Houston, Texas, left four employees dead. Richard James Wilkerson, a former employee who had recently been fired, returned to the center armed with knives along with two accomplices: his 16-year-old cousin James Edward Randle and 20-year-old Kenneth Ray Ransom. Wilkerson confronted the center's manager, 18-year-old Anil Varughese, forcing him at knifepoint to open the safe before fatally stabbing him. Three co-workers present at the time — 22-year-old Roddy Harris and brothers Arnold Pequeno (19) and Joerene Pequeno (18) — were also stabbed to death by Randle and Ransom. The three men fled with approximately $2,000, and Wilkerson also took a paycheck Varughese had issued him shortly before the killing.
Varughese's body was discovered in his office around 8 a.m. on July 1, 1983; an autopsy confirmed that he died from stab wounds. The bodies of Harris and the Pequeno brothers were found in the center's bathroom, and autopsies confirmed that all three had been fatally stabbed. Varughese was a pre-medical student at Houston Baptist University, and Harris was a music major at the same institution.
Police arrested Wilkerson and Randle on July 3, 1983, reportedly after Randle's mother told authorities she had overheard her son discussing plans to commit robbery and murder. Both were charged with capital murder and, according to reporting cited in the case history, confessed during interrogation. Ransom remained at large until July 5, 1983, when he surrendered to police accompanied by a lawyer and was charged with capital murder.
At trial, Wilkerson was convicted of capital murder for Varughese's killing on January 6, 1984, and sentenced to death the following day. Randle, tried as a juvenile offender who was 16 at the time of the crime, was convicted of capital murder for Arnold Pequeno's death on March 9, 1984, and received a life sentence with parole eligibility after 20 years due to his age. Ransom was convicted of capital murder for Arnold Pequeno's death on June 14, 1984, and sentenced to death on June 15, 1984.
Wilkerson's appeals were denied by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals over several years; his lawyers unsuccessfully argued racial bias in jury selection. He was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit on August 31, 1993. Ransom's appeals were similarly denied, and he was executed by lethal injection at the Huntsville Unit on October 28, 1997, maintaining his innocence in his final statement. Randle remained in prison under his life sentence.
