Illustrative

At approximately 4:00 a.m. on September 8, 2000, four men were stopped at a red light on U.S. Route 30 just outside Atlantic City, New Jersey, in a 1989 Honda Accord. The driver was 19-year-old Lamont Wilson, with passengers 26-year-old Richard White Jr., 21-year-old Terrence Harris, and 20-year-old Michael Demps. Lloyd Massey II, a 21-year-old casino security guard who had been trailing the vehicle, pulled in front of the car, exited his own vehicle armed with an AK-47 he had purchased in November 1999, and opened fire, shooting out the windshield. Wilson fled the vehicle but was shot multiple times by Massey and collapsed in the street; the unattended car veered into nearby marshes. Massey continued firing into the vehicle and moved to the rear-left seat, where Demps — reportedly unable to flee due to a child lock — was shot and killed. Harris, seated in the rear-right, was not shot, though he was struck by broken glass. Massey then fled the scene in his own vehicle.

Witnesses at the public intersection did not intervene, but several called 911 at 4:04 a.m. Police responded quickly, but Wilson, White, and Demps were pronounced dead at the scene. At least 24 shell casings were recovered. Massey drove back to Egg Harbor and disposed of the firearm in the Great Egg Harbor Bay. He monitored the investigation through his uncle, learned that detectives wished to speak with him, and fled to Georgia, where he was arrested on September 10, 2000.

The killings followed a physical altercation earlier that night at Fuller's Bar in Egg Harbor Township. Witnesses said Demps confronted Massey around 3:30 a.m. and defeated him in a fight, leaving Massey embarrassed.

Massey, born September 4, 1979, was raised in Pleasantville, New Jersey, and attended Pleasantville High School, where he played football and was named homecoming king in his senior year. He later worked part-time as a security guard at the Sands Atlantic City hotel and casino.

Massey was convicted in 2002 on three counts of murder and sentenced to serve three life sentences. In 2010, he sought to appeal his sentence, arguing that an eyewitness had failed a polygraph test that was not entered into evidence at trial. The appeal was denied, with the reviewing judges concluding that disclosure of the polygraph result would not have changed the trial's outcome.
