Murder of Carol Ann Dougherty
Documents violence · sexual violence · crimes against children — written to inform, not to shock.

On the afternoon of October 22, 1962, nine-year-old Carol Ann Dougherty left her home in Bristol Borough, Pennsylvania, to return books to the Bristol Free Library. As was her habit, she stopped at St. Mark's Roman Catholic Church along her route to say a prayer. When she failed to return home by 4:30 PM, her worried parents began searching for her. Her father, Frank Dougherty, found her body around 6:00 PM on a landing leading to the church's choir loft. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled to death, with police estimating the attack occurred around 3:35 PM.
The initial investigation was led jointly by Bristol police, under Chief Vincent Faragalli, and the Pennsylvania State Police. Investigators collected physical evidence, including pubic hairs found in the victim's hand. Over the years, several individuals were investigated as suspects: Frank Zuchero, a handyman seen near the church who initially confessed but was later deemed not credible; Wayne Roach, a 19-year-old whose parents had reported finding Carol's name written in his notebook; Joseph Sabadish, a priest at St. Mark's whose alibi was later found to be false; and William Schrader, who had been seen outside the church shortly after the estimated time of the murder. Despite extensive investigation, including polygraph testing and grand jury testimony, no one was charged at the time.
In 1994, a grand jury was convened and considered two suspects, Sabadish and Schrader, the latter of whom was extradited from Louisiana to Pennsylvania for the proceedings. Sabadish and Frank Dougherty testified, while Schrader invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Both suspects passed polygraph tests, were not indicted, and were released without charge.
In 2025, under Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn, a new investigative grand jury was convened to examine the case. On October 29, 2025, the grand jury concluded that William Schrader was responsible for the murder. This conclusion was based on eyewitness reports placing Schrader near the church following the attack, alleged confessions Schrader had made to his step-son, his relocation from Pennsylvania to the southern United States soon after the murder, and a visual pubic hair analysis that could not rule him out as a suspect. DNA evidence recovered from the case was reported to be too degraded for modern analysis. Schrader died in 2002 and was never charged in connection with the case. According to the grand jury's findings, Schrader had an extensive criminal history, including attempted murder, assault, domestic violence, and rapes and sexual assaults of women and girls, as well as a 1985 manslaughter conviction for killing a 12-year-old girl in a 1970 arson attack.
