2012 Makhachkala attack

Two suicide bombers detonated explosive-laden cars near a traffic police checkpoint in Makhachkala, Dagestan, on 3 May 2012, killing as many as 40 people and injuring more than 130.

Illustrative

On 3 May 2012, two suicide bombers detonated explosive-filled vehicles near a traffic police checkpoint in Makhachkala, the capital city of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. The blasts killed as many as 40 people and injured more than 130 others, at least 67 of them seriously.

Government sources at the time speculated that the bombers may have been transporting the explosive material, described as TNT, toward a downtown location in anticipation of the annual May Day parade scheduled for 9 May.

In the immediate aftermath, authorities put the official death toll at 13. This figure stood for several years before being substantially revised. In December 2016, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) put the casualty figures at 40 dead and more than 100 injured. This revised statement was issued in connection with the death of Rustam Asildarov, who was allegedly involved in the Makhachkala attack.

The attack is noted in broader accounts of violence in the North Caucasus region during 2012, alongside other incidents such as the Makhachkala Rus bombing.
