2014 Paktika Car Bombing

On July 15, 2014, a car bomb suicide attack struck a crowded bazaar in Urgun, a district center in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. Police observed a suicide bomber driving an SUV into the center of Urgun along the main road at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time. The bomber detonated his payload roughly thirty minutes later, at around 10:30 a.m., killing himself in the explosion.
The blast destroyed approximately 30 shops in the bazaar, most of which were constructed of mud and straw, along with dozens of vehicles parked or passing nearby. The attack killed 89 people and wounded another 42. The scale of civilian casualties made it the bloodiest attack on civilians in Afghanistan since the 2008 Kandahar bombing.
The number of casualties overwhelmed the capacity of the local clinic in Urgun. Afghan military forces responded by bringing in helicopters and ambulances to transport the wounded and the dead from the bomb site to Sharana, the provincial capital of Paktika, for further medical treatment and processing.
Responsibility for the attack was attributed to the Haqqani network, a militant group. The attack is reported to have been planned in the North Waziristan District of Pakistan, an area historically used as a base for militant activity affecting the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.
The Urgun bombing occurred in Paktika Province, an area that saw other significant attacks during this period, including the 2014 Yahya Khel suicide bombing, which also took place in Paktika. The attack forms part of a broader pattern of insurgent violence in Afghanistan attributed to groups including the Taliban and affiliated networks during this period of the conflict.
