2016 Arish attack

On March 20, 2016, a mortar attack struck a security checkpoint in Al-Arish, in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted the Al-Safa checkpoint, a security position manned by Egyptian police and military personnel.

According to the Egyptian Ministry of Interior, the mortar rounds fired at the checkpoint killed at least 13 police officers and soldiers. The attack occurred amid the broader Sinai insurgency, a period of sustained militant activity targeting Egyptian security forces in the region, which had previously included the October 2014 Sinai attacks and the July 2015 Sinai attacks.

The attack was one incident within a series of militant strikes against Egyptian security checkpoints in North Sinai during this period.
