2016 Jalalabad Suicide Bombing

On January 13, 2016, militants affiliated with the Islamic State – Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) attacked Pakistan's consulate in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. According to a contemporaneous timeline of events in Afghanistan for that year, a suicide bomber attempted to join a queue of people seeking visas to Pakistan at the consulate. When he was prevented from entering the building, he detonated his explosives. The attack killed 9 people and injured 12 more.

The incident occurred amid a broader pattern of violence in eastern Afghanistan during this period, with Nangarhar province — where Jalalabad is located — serving as a center of activity for ISIS-K, which had established a presence in the region. The attack on the Pakistani consulate came shortly after other security incidents in the same general period, including an attack near the Indian consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif on January 2, 2016, and preceded a subsequent attack on the Indian consulate in Jalalabad on March 2, 2016, in which five militants were killed and nine people were injured.
