On 20 August 2021, a suicide attack struck a convoy transporting Chinese citizens along an expressway under construction in the Nagori ward area of Gwadar, in southwestern Pakistan. According to Pakistan's interior ministry, three vehicles carrying Chinese nationals were traveling under military and police surveillance as part of the Gwadar Expressway project when the attack occurred.
As the convoy approached the fishermen's colony on the East Bay Expressway, a young boy reportedly ran toward the vehicles. The attacker detonated an explosive device approximately 15 to 20 meters away from the convoy after plainclothes army personnel moved to intercept them. The blast resulted in the deaths of two local children, while three others were injured, including one Chinese national. The injured Chinese worker was transported to Gwadar Hospital, where his condition was reported as out of danger.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant organization operating in the Balochistan region, claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group described the incident as a "self-sacrificing" attack directed against a convoy of Chinese engineers.
The attack occurred amid an ongoing insurgency in Balochistan, a province where separatist groups including the BLA have targeted Chinese nationals and infrastructure projects associated with China-Pakistan economic cooperation, including development around the strategically significant Gwadar port.
No individuals have been publicly named, charged, or convicted in connection with this attack based on available source material. The case remains documented primarily through contemporaneous reporting, with the Balochistan Liberation Army's claim of responsibility representing the only attribution of the attack to a specific actor.
