On 27 January 2022, at about 3:40 a.m., a mass shooting occurred at a Pivdenmash factory in Dnipro, Ukraine. The shooting took place as guards began handing out weapons to servicemen stationed at the factory. A National Guard of Ukraine conscript, reportedly armed with an AKS-74U assault rifle, shot dead four male servicemen and one civilian woman, and wounded five others. Of the twenty-two soldiers present, two managed to escape the scene and call for an ambulance and police. The shooter then fled with his weapon and was detained roughly six hours later, at approximately 9:30 a.m., in the nearby town of Pidhorodne, after he turned himself in to police.
In the aftermath, Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation launched criminal proceedings against officials of the National Guard of Ukraine, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine established a special investigative commission tasked with determining the causes of the tragedy. Law enforcement identified the shooter as Artemiy Riabchuk (also transliterated as Ryabchuk), a National Guard serviceman from Odesa Oblast born in 2001. He was informed by the State Bureau of Investigation that he was suspected of murder, desertion, and theft of weapons; investigators did not rule out a possible terrorist motive. One lawmaker stated that Riabchuk had previously been bullied.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the shooting as "terrible" and offered condolences to victims' families. More than 40 National Guard members organized an effort to help provide blood donations to victims. Mykola Balan, commander of the National Guard of Ukraine, resigned in response to the incident.
Judicial proceedings against Riabchuk began the day after the shooting: on 28 January 2022, the Kirovsky District Court of Dnipro ordered his detention without bail for 60 days. His pretrial detention was later extended, on 11 March 2022, until 9 May 2022. His case went to trial later in 2022, and on 23 April 2024 he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
