On the night of 9 July 2022, a mass shooting occurred at a tavern in Orlando, a neighborhood in Soweto, Gauteng Province, South Africa. A group of men armed with rifles and a 9mm pistol opened fire on patrons inside the tavern at approximately 21:00 GMT.
The attack resulted in significant casualties. A total of 23 people were shot during the incident. Of these, 12 people were killed at the scene, and three more later died from their injuries in the hospital. A fourth injured victim subsequently died in hospital on 12 July 2022, bringing the total death toll to 16.
Following the shooting, the perpetrators fled the scene in a white minibus taxi. Police arrived at the scene at 04:00 GMT on 10 July 2022, several hours after the shooting occurred. Injured victims were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital for treatment.
Notably, this shooting took place on the same day as a separate mass shooting at a tavern in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal province. However, according to the source, authorities do not believe the two incidents were connected or linked in any way.
