2023 Beledweyne bombing

Overview
On 23 September 2023, at least 30 people were killed and more than 50 injured when a truck bomb exploded at a checkpoint in the Nur Hawaad neighborhood of Beledweyne, a town in the Hiran region of Hirshabelle State, Somalia.
Background
Beledweyne has been the site of repeated major attacks attributed to the jihadist group al-Shabaab, with prior incidents recorded in June 2009, October and November 2013, February 2022, March 2022, September 2022, and October 2022.
The Bombing
According to available reporting, a truck was stopped at a checkpoint in the Nur Hawaad neighborhood after refusing to pay a tax. A bomb loaded on the truck then exploded at the checkpoint. The blast killed at least 30 people and injured more than 50 others. The explosion caused extensive destruction, damaging civilian homes, vehicles, and commercial establishments across roughly one kilometre of the surrounding area.
Aftermath
Of the injured, twenty were transported to hospitals in Beledweyne, while another twenty were reported to be in critical condition. Because medical services in Beledweyne were severely limited, seriously injured survivors were transferred to Mogadishu for further treatment.
Mohamed Abdi Waare, the former president of Hirshabelle, publicly condemned the bombing in strong terms.
