On 8 June 2023, an explosion occurred during a mourning service held at a mosque in Fayzabad, the capital of Badakhshan Province in northern Afghanistan. The blast happened close to the Nabawi Mosque. At least 19 people were killed and 38 more were injured in the explosion.

The memorial service that was targeted was being held to remember Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi, the deputy governor of Badakhshan Province, who had himself been killed earlier that same week in a car bombing. Mourners had gathered at the mosque to pay respects to him when the attack occurred.

The Islamic State – Khorasan Province, an affiliate of the Islamic State group active in the region, claimed responsibility for the mosque bombing.
